Fabiana’s inspiration for LaMunt’s “Artsy Approach”

At LaMunt we want to inspire you to go into the mountains, to experience them fully and explore them with open eyes. We want to inspire you to discover the diverse beauty of the mountains. But hiking and skiing are not the only ways you can explore them. Mountains can be experienced or perceived through 360 degrees – namely through art.

This is the new female perspective on the mountains.

Fabiana: Fabiana has been instrumental in shaping and developing our newly created LaMunt brand. She is a designer at the Sports Design Thinking agency Pascher+Heinz, who are not only responsible for our logo, but also for LaMunt's whole corporate identity. Together with them, we came up with new ideas and hammered out the details, always making sure the LaMunt brand maintained its own distinct identity.

This was largely down to five illustrations designed especially for us by Fabiana, using collage techniques to combine photography and graphic design. These illustrations are so central to the brand that it seemed only fitting to tell you more about them. And the best way to do that is by introducing you to Fabiana herself.

You can find out more about Fabiana and LaMunt's illustrations in this interview.

Where does the emphasis lie with your design work?

With my design work, I always aim to create an all-encompassing, unique look for brands.

How did you come up with the idea of the LaMunt ‘Berg’ (mountain) illustrations? What was your approach?

It was important to find a visual representation of LaMunt’s uniqueness as a brand. I felt that using illustrations was appropriate in evoking the themes of mountains, sport, and femininity in a creative and inspiring way.

What was your working process for these illustrations? How did they come about?

Initially, I started exploring some ideas in a very free and analogue way, using different types of paper, photographs and materials. It was important to have the tactile experience. Together in the team we did a lot of cutting out, gluing and tearing – trying lots of things out. That’s how all kinds of different shapes and landscapes came into being. After the initial ideas development phase, I digitized the designs, then fine-tuned them bit by bit, and overlayed the various illustrations to create an image that is cohesive yet multi-layered.

With a project like this, how much of it is ‘playing’, using your imagination, and how much is the design process?

I like to being with as few preconceived ideas as possible and just try out anything that comes into my mind. But I would say that’s part of the design process. In my opinion, the first stage of the design process involves looking at the subject matter from different angles, finding inspiration and making an initial analogue or digital attempt that brings me step by step closer to the end result.

How do you choose what to focus on in an illustration?

I felt it was important to depict different aspects and facets of the mountains in a creative way. So, I selected mountain scenes that spoke to me personally. The reflection in a crystal-clear mountain lake, a magical sunrise from behind a blanket of fog in the early hours of the morning or a high sun on a hot summer’s afternoon.

How would you describe our style?

For me, the LaMunt illustrations are lively, multi-layered, artistic, nature-inspired and feminine in style, reflecting the essence of the LaMunt brand very well.

What was it like working with a brand that inspires a new female perspective on the mountains? What did you like about it?

I had so much fun working with LaMunt! I love the outdoors, and I’ve never worked with a brand that is so wholly focused on women in the mountains. I found it very inspiring and exciting, straight from the outset.

What motivates you in your work?

I enjoy seeing how lots of individual design ideas and drafts gradually come together to create a complete visual identity for a brand.

Where do you get your inspiration?

I find inspiration in a variety of everyday situations, but also in nature, through sport, books and of course on the internet too.

What do mountains and nature mean to you? And how do you experience the mountains?

Mountains are the perfect offset to my everyday city life. To me, mountains and nature mean peace, strength, adventure, and freedom.
